TESSELLATIONS

USING APPLEWORKS

1. Open Appleworks.
2. Make a new Draw document.
3. Under the File menu, pull down to Save.

Name the document "your name, tess"
Save into your personal folder.

4. Select the Paint Object Tool

Click and drag a rectangular area on the screen
This activates the paint mode.

5. Select a color from the background color palette.
6. Select the Rectangular Tool. Hold down the shift key while drawing a square.
7. Select the Lasso Tool Draw a "selection" in the side of the rectangle. (diagram 1)

Move the curser to the selected area. The curser will turn into an arrow.
Click and drag the selected area to the opposite side of the rectangle and place it. (diagram 2)

8. Repeat #7 on the top/bottom of the rectangle. (diagram 3 & 4)
9. Draw details and color to create a new object. (diagram 5)
10. Select and copy new object.
11. Under the Edit menu select Past. Grab the object and fit it beside the original object.

While it is still selected (moving lines around the edge), pull down the Tools menu to Paint Effects and then to sub menu Invert.

12. Paste multiples of the new object together to create a Tessellation. Invert every other object, making a color pattern.(diagram 6)

When your tessellation is complete, put it in the drop box for grading.

NOTES:

Four Types of Transformations (movements)

Translation (or slide) - a transformation involving a slide of a rigid figure
Rotation - a transformation that turns a figure about a point in a plane
Reflection (or a flip) - a transformation that mirrors a figure in a plane
Glide Reflection - a transformation that moves a figure in a slide and also mirrors it.
