Metal Repoussé

Frame

ASSIGNMENT:

Use metal repoussé method to create a frame.

GRADE:

NOTES:

What is repoussé?

Repoussé is an ancient form of metalwork. It consists of taking a piece of sheet metal, tracing a picture into the metal with tools. The whole technique is called embossing.

Repoussé is a method of creating a design by pressing the reverse side of a metal surface. Literal meaning of repoussé is French “to push back”.

NOTE:

I use tongue depressors as a tool. One end is rounded for smoothing and the other end can be cut with an xacto knife to form a point. Pencils are also good for incising lines. The metal can be embossed fairly deep if it is done slowly. Pushing out the metal too quickly or too hard will cause it to buckle, crease or even tear. I have students lay the work on a magazine for padding and work on both the back and the front of the metal, turning it as needed.

NOTE:

Color can be added to the metal with permenent marker. The marker is transparent enough to keep the shine/look of metal.
