Typeface Collage

ASSIGNMENT:

 Create a typeface collage by overlapping a variety of different fonts, sizes and value contrasts

Steps:

  1. Begin with 9"x12" white paper and magazines and other sources of text.
  2. Search magazines for a variety of typefaces. Cut neatly around words or partial words.
  3. Glue into interesting composition
  4. Overlap typefaces until all the format is covered.

NEXT LESSON:

Use a viewfinder to find an interesting composition within your collage. Use grid method to duplicate your composition.

STEPS:

  1. Complete typeface collage
  2. Use a viewfinder to locate composition within collage
  3. Draw 1/4" grid on the composition
  4. Make 1" grid on 9:x12: white drawing paper.
  5. Enlarge 1/4" grid to 1" grid. Draw one grid at a time.
  6. Color - duplicate color that is in original composition

NOTES:

Lettering can be segregated into 4 basic groups.
 GOTHIC: all letters are composed of uniform widths
 ROMAN:  all letters composed of thick & thin lines
 TEXT:   includes all styles similar to old English text.
 SCRIPT: has the look of handwriting.
