ASSIGNMENT:
Use pinch pot method to sculpt a clay whistle
STEPS:
1. Begin with a tennis ball size lump of clay
2. Pinch and pull clay to sculpt an animal or a bird.
3. Hollow and smooth inside of sculpture
4. Insert flat stick for whistle blow hole.
5. Cover dug out hole with flap of clay and join edges.
6. Top opening for musical sound must be at an angle to the blow hole.
7. Repair sculpture and smooth surface
8. Etch name onto bottom

NOTES:
Tiny clay whistles in the shape of birds or animals represent an ancient, if little known, tradition among potters. Thousands of years ago, in places as widely separated as South America, Eastern Europe and China, potters knew the secret of making a hollow piece of clay produce a musical note. Continued throughout history, the tradition was brought to America by some of our earliest Colonial potters.
