Clay Slab Tile

ASSIGNMENT:

Use earthenware clay to carve a bas relief framed letter into a leather hard ceramic tile.

STEPS:

    1. Plan letter and frame on newsprint.
    2. Draw plan lightly onto clay tile. Don't forget frame.
    3. Use clay tool to carve out negative space
    4. Positive space may be carved in layers
    5. use "junk" objects to stamp textured design into tile. Decide where texture will be stamped.
    6. Carve ridges on back of tile to help alleviate warping.
    7. Allow tile to air dry slowly

Frame and letter design
bas relief
Textures

NOTES:

Bas relief is low raised sculpture. Relief sculpture is made to be viewed from the front only as opposed to in-the-round sculpture that is meant to be viewed from many angles.

Bas relief is usually created by carving away the negative space.
