Clay Slab Container

ASSIGNMENT:

Design a clay slab container that expresses a theme..

1   List things that can be kept in a container (size not less than 4”, not more than 6 inches?
2.  What inspired your theme? Nature, man-made. .. .
3.  What shape best expresses your theme?
4.  what kind of decoration would best express what the container is for?
5.  Does the container need “feet”., handles, holder, additions?

STEPS for Planning:

1. Make thumbnail sketches of ideas for container. Select one to use for construction.
2. Make template for base actual size.
3. Decide how deep box is to be. Make some templates to fit sides of box.
4.  Make template for lid.

STEPS for clay :

1. Cut slab for base of box using template. Roll out slab of clay for sides of box. Cut sides. Gently curve sides to fit base (try to avoid leaving finger marks and indentations).
2. Use template to cut lid. (Show student some different options for making lid fit). Wrap slabs overnight in plastic.
3. Assemble slabs. Score and slip where slabs join. Smooth in a thin coil of clay in seams.
4. Decide how lid is to be done. One method is to put slabs on bottom of lid to fit inside box. Measure inside of box to insure fit and correct placement of slabs. Another method would be to fuse lid onto box - then cut an irregular line with X-acto knife. Box lid will only fit on in one direct. The irregular cut will keep it from sliding (have a sample that shows both methods). Fill box with wads of newspaper to keep lid from sagging.
5. Decorate outside of box.•
6. Allow to dry slowly then bisque fire.

• There are many ways to decorate, including:

1. Add some clay (added coil and slab decorations) to build up pattern, picture or texture.
2. Remove some of the colored clay glaze to create pattern, picture, or texture. (sgraffito)
3. Incise lines in the surface to create a drawing or designs.
4. Stamp items into the surface
5. Add pieces on the bottom to raise it off the table a bit.
6. Add handles

NOTES:

We will use the following elements and principals of art in this lesson:
ELEMENTS OF ART
Texture – the way something feels or looks like it feels. Implied texture looks like it feels a certain way. Actual texture is the way something actual feels.
PRINCIPALS OF ART
Pattern - Artists create pattern by repeating a line, shape or color over and over again.
Rhythm - Visual rhythm makes you think of the rhythms you hear in music or dance. Artists create visual rhythm by repeating art elements and creating patterns.
Unity - all parts work together to make the art work look right. Unity is the feeling that everything in the work of art works together and looks like it fits.
